Love This Space

A place, or space, of inspiration...because that's what art's about

Every night I cry a little, whether I show it on the outside or not is an entirely different story. My little sister is turning 6 years old soon. And in the past 6 years I have seen her go through more pain than anyone I have ever known. I remember the moment I found out that she had a terrible skin condition. I remember the moments she screamed over and over again. I remember the moments she shook in my arms. I remember the moments where I couldn’t tell the difference between her and a burn patient. And I hate to admit it but these moments still continue and will for the rest of her life.
My sister has a rare skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa. She blisters from friction, scratching or the slightest of rubbing on her frail skin. Basically, she lacks the glue for her skin to stay on. Needles are used to pop her blisters and gauze to absorb the liquid that seeps from her wounds. At times, she is bandaged when her blisters and sores need more protection. Her condition is not contagious but it is genetic. Epidermolysis Bullosa occurs 1 in 50,000 births.
She’s just like any other child her age but she has some obstacles here and there. Most of the time, my sister is just her own worst enemy because she wants to do absolutely everything. There are some times where she can’t eat certain foods because they could cut her mouth and cause blisters. There are some times where she has to stay inside because it’s too hot or sunny and it could also cause blisters. She knows what she can or cannot do but she likes to test her limits.
I love this little girl more than anything. Before she was born, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. After she was born, I made a promise to myself and to her that I would try my best to get out the awareness of this skin condition to as many people as I possibly could. And I am determined to do exactly that.
Please reblog this to spread awareness. It would mean the world to me, my little sister and others I have met and yet to met with this skin condition.
Any questions for me? http://stillunwritten.tumblr.com/ask
